Clove in Perfume: Eugenol, Warm Spice and What to Check

Understand clove and eugenol in perfume, useful pairings, the difference between spicy and sweet, and how to approach ingredient labelling.

1

Clove gives a warm, pungent spice effect that can also feel woody or medicinal.

2

Eugenol is a major contributor to the familiar aroma of clove oil.

3

A clove note and an ingredient declaration describe different things.

4

Rose, woods and citrus can shift how the spice feels.

Does eugenol on a label mean the perfume will smell of cloves?

No. It may be present through different fragrance materials and need not dominate the scent. An ingredient declaration is not a note pyramid.

Can clove smell cool as well as warm?

Yes. Its sharp aromatic edge can feel cool or medicinal against a warm spicy background. Your associations and the surrounding formula affect that impression.
